Some folks might think a narrated motor tour spells tourist with a capital T, but the quirky little Conch Tour Train is a great way to garner an overview of Key West in the shaded comfort of a canopied tram.
You'll pass by most of the attractions we've written up in this chapter, sometimes twice, because in tiny Key West the train weaves a circuitous route that often changes from one hour to the next depending on road construction and special events that necessitate street closures.

The Fruit and Spice Park is internationally known for its more than 500 varieties of exotic and subtropical fruit, nut, spice and herb trees and shrubs. Visitors can sample and learn about many of these varieties and take daily guided tours and naturalist-led workshops.

International Orchid Center

A new 20,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style building with an atrium and copula. The balcony is adorned with custom-designed medallions decorated with an orchid motif. The craftsman used several pictures of cattlelyas for inspiration as he created his own "artistic hybrid" for the design.

The serenity and isolation of remote islands have always captured man's imagination. Lignumvitae Key is no exception. To step ashore here is to take a step back into the past. The Matheson House, built in 1919, has changed little over the years. A windmill supplied power; fresh water was provided from a cistern which filled by rain falling on the roof. This is how island people lived during a simpler time when most of their needs were met by the land and sea around them.

Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens

Thriving in western Palm Beach County with all the color and majesty of an orchid, the Morikami and its lush gardens provide locals with an affordable journey to the Orient that requires no passport and offers Japanese art, history and cuisine. A member of the original Yamato agricultural colony in 1906, benefactor and namesake George Morikami donated the west Delray Beach land to the city in 1975. The museum opened in 1977, a year after Morikami’s death. Today the museum houses a Japanese Art Gallery and a Tea Room.
