With our new plans to travel to Jamaica for six months we’ll need to develop plans to continue our childrens education while traveling abroad. Not only will we need to consider the legal aspects of reporting to our home state of Florida but we won’t be placing our oldest son in the summer school program as we had planned to. He goes to the special learning program at the local elementary school and has really gained from the interaction with other students and the professional help he receives from the dedicated staff. It’s a great supplement to the home school program he gets from us and it has helped him with his speech difficulties to have new people to communicate with. I do believe in homeschooling but I think there is a time and place fort outside help and this appears to be working very well for AJ.
I have done a bot of research on the school systems in Jamaica and they definitely do not offer the same level of specialization for autistic children that is offered here in the states but they do have some programs in place. I’ll have to gather more information on that after we arrive in country and we most likely will not enroll him in school until we return unless we find a private program of some sorts. I think our best choice may be to hire help to assist us in building a custom homeschool program for our kids. I think with the difference in cost between here and Jamaica I might be able to hire people to offer some instruction on things I simply cannot aford here in Florida. I have always felt AJ would do well with some musical instruction but we’ve never had much luck with it. I’m hoping to find something in Jamaica to open him up to playing more music than he does. He seems to want to perform but he gets very embarrassed and will not allow us to watch him any longer. I think we’ll need outside help to break us of that one it seems.
I think we’ll need to find a nanny/tutor in Jamaica that can help us with taking over our kids education and I’m actually looking forward to taking over control of their daily education again full time. I think it’s best for the family moist of the time and our new adnetures in Jamaica will be a great learning experience for us all I am certain.
